Sexual abuse behind bars is a widespread human rights crisis in corrections facilities across the nation. The U.S. Department of Justice estimates that at least 216,600 children and adults were sexually abused in prisons, jails, and youth detention facilities in 2008 alone.
Even this alarming statistic does not tell the whole story; it includes only the number of people assaulted, not the number of incidents of abuse. On average, victims in adult facilities were abused three to five times each over the course of the year.
Children and teens face even more danger than adults. The Bureau of Justice Statistics found that nearly one in eight youth in juvenile detention had been sexually assaulted at their current facility in one year. Shockingly, 80 percent of the reported abuse was committed by staff – the very people that families and communities trust to keep their children safe. Like adults, young victims were usually abused again and again, often more than ten times, and frequently by more than one person.
В двух словах: за 2008 год в пенитенциарных учреждениях США (говоря попроще — в тюрьмах) изнасиловали 216600 осуждённых. При этом 80% детей изнасиловали сотрудники учреждений, а взрослых огуляли не по одному разу.
